Introduction to Student Leadership

By Jamie Weissman on March 10, 2014

Coming into college, I was one of those people who was excited for the opportunity to take new kinds of classes. Call me nerdy, academic, or all of the above, but I imagined classes being modeled after the ones in Accepted: ‘How To Answer Interview Questions You Aren’t Prepared For 101’ and ‘Walking Around and Thinking About Stuff.’ So when I came across “ Introduction to Student Leadership,” it seemed like the perfect fit.

Introduction to Student Leadership is a 3-credit course designed to give students, well, an introduction to student leadership. The class is designed to help students think outside of the box and focus on the skills they already have to become successful leaders.

I take the course with graduate students Tyler McClenithan and Rose Jackson, which is perhaps my favorite part. The duo is easy to relate to, and they discuss everyday examples to engage with the class and help us realize how important leadership skills are.

If you make it towards the middle of the course, you’ll be taken to Eppley’s ropes course. Though I won’t reveal all of the details, an hour at the ropes course doing team-building exercises sure beats a history lecture in my book.

Though I am not done with the class just yet, I can truly say I would recommend the course. It has been tremendous in terms of public speaking and leadership, and is definitely worth fitting into your four-year plan.
