7 Campus Fashion Inspirations For Winter Break

By Jessica Mahmoud on December 20, 2014

As a fashion student myself, I know firsthand the struggle of finding the perfect outfit. As winter break is now here, it is easy to not put as much effort into looking nice.

Now I’m not saying you should spend your days inside looking amazing, but when you do go out, it’s nice to look good. I hope this article gives you some inspiration for outfits for the next few weeks.

Dark colors are always great for winter. Rather than just all black though, throw in a lighter piece, like this pink skirt. The fun contrast really makes the outfit stand out. The bohemian look of the baggy pieces, plus the hat, is just perfection!

That is actually a skirt, but you could easily do the same thing by layering a sweater over a dress. It is really a fun tip to try to repurpose pieces without actually buying a skirt and dress. Use winter break to try it out!

Leggings don’t always have to be worn with plain pieces and used for a lounge type day. They can easily be dressed up by pairing a long dress or oversized sweater. Thick, fleece-lined leggings are the best investment for these colder months, as opposed to thinner ones or all spandex.

Of course it’s your opinion on how long your top should go and whether you consider leggings to be the same as pants. Try pairing them with long, warm jackets, like this fur lined one. Heels or boots can finish the look.

I took this picture a while ago, but it can definitely be made winter appropriate. Black jeans are a great option for the winter, rather than the standard blue ones. Then, throw on a sweater and find a cool jacket. This acid wash jean jacket is warm enough for days when it’s not below zero.

Plus, a warm scarf and even a beanie can definitely keep you extra warm. Fun jackets, like leather or denim with embroidery are so fun, and can really make a unique statement. Be sure to check out thrift stores for those!

This was a really cold day. Even though it may not look like it, this is a warm outfit. The layering was key here. She is actually wearing a tank top, shirt, and a flannel, plus the fuzzy cardigan. If needed, you could also put on a jacket too.

Then on bottom, knee socks over tights are the best trick in the book for when you want to wear that new skirt, shorts, or dress. They give off a really edgy vibe, and the peek of tights in between is really unique.

The trick of knee socks over tights can also be used with oversized sweaters. Today, oversized sweaters have easily transitioned into dresses and if you get the right length and thickness, they can keep you warm enough for the winter.

Pulling the collar out of a button down shirt underneath gives a proper, bohemian look and the extra layer serves as warmth. For shoes, go for cute heeled booties or oxfords.

Just like sweaters, oversized cardigans are also very popular. They are so easy to use to spice up any basic outfit in an instant. Often they come in fun, Aztec prints, but you can also find them in solid colors.

They’re perfect for days when you’re in a rush and just need something to throw on. You can simply pair them with black leggings or jeans, or use them to spice up a skater skirt or dress. Try pairing them with shoes that match the cardigan, as shown in the picture.

Whoever said no white after labor day was silly because you can totally rock it, like Maria (Instagram @Aloclassy). A fur vest or faux fur vest is a great investment if you want to be fashionable this winter. Layer a jacket over yourself and keep it open to show off the vest.

As seen here, white jeans can easily be transitioned to the colder months by pairing them with wintery pieces like sweaters and vest. The flannel around the waist along with the black heels finished the look.

You’ve probably heard it a million times: pattern on pattern. This trend takes practice to not be too overwhelming. Stripes and checkered prints are a great option because they’re not too different. Also, more neutral colors are a good idea, rather than brighter one.

Patterned scarves and sweaters are also an example of this trend. This picture also shows off the tied-around- your-waist trend, which is finally coming back. Finish the trendy look with good old fashion Converse and a fun beanie.

In college, we get more time off than we can really even wrap our heads around. While you may be spending a lot of it sitting around binge watching tv shows, you’ll probably go out for a hot chocolate date to catch up with a friend. In those cases, I hope this article gave you some inspiration for some cute winter outfits.
