4 Tips To Make Your Closet Spring Cleaning A Breeze

By Kristen Peuvion on April 14, 2015

We’ve all heard of the term “spring cleaning,” and a lot of you probably participate in it.

There is just something about the springtime that brings about this sense of urgency that we need to overhaul our lives and clean up those “messy” parts of our lives, whether they be literal, physical messes or otherwise. After a long cold winter, we all welcome this idea of spring cleaning with open arms.

When it comes to those physical messes, spring cleaning usually means a time to tackle that messy closet. With the end of winter and the beginning of spring, our closets are packed with chunky sweaters, clunky shoes and puffy outerwear, not to mention the countless other items of clothing that have accumulated since the last spring cleaning, which leaves our closets looking worse than ever.

So when spring rolls around, it’s time to do some much needed cleaning.

This can be a daunting task, though. After all, where do you start? What can you get rid of? What needs to stay? And how do you keep your closet clean year round, so spring cleaning doesn’t have to be this big, overwhelming task?

Fortunately, spring cleaning is not as hard as it looks. In fact, here are some tricks to try that will make your spring cleaning a whole lot easier!

1. Get a set number of hangers

This trick can be tough to accomplish if you really love clothes, but if you’re up for the challenge it works wonders on a messy, cluttered closet.

All you have to do for this trick to work is narrow down the amount of hangers you have in your closet to a reasonable amount, that way you only have room for a set number of clothing items to hang in there.

You’ll be left with a clean closet, rather than a closet stuffed to the brim with clothes and accessories.

This trick makes your closet look super organized and neat while making it difficult for you to add unnecessary items to your closet and keeping you from going on insane shopping sprees where you bring home 10 different things.

If there’s nowhere to put the items, hopefully you won’t go out and get more. The limited hanger trick gives you a two for one bonus!

2. One in, one out

This is another harsh trick, but the results are also two fold, just like the previous trick. The one in, one out rule is exactly as it sounds. When you buy a new item that needs to go in your closet, you must take one out before it can go in.

This keeps the amount of items in your closet at a steady number, which prevents mess and clutter. So, that means you either need to stop buying new things, which helps your wallet, or be willing to get rid of a lot of pieces.

3. The ribbon method

The ribbon method is one you’ve probably already heard about. Unlike the previous two tips, this one doesn’t involve anything super drastic.

All you have to do is tie a piece of ribbon to the very end of your closet rod–whether you choose the right or left side, it doesn’t really matter. Just make sure that all of your clothes start on one side of the ribbon.

Then, once you wear something in your closet, move it to the other side of the ribbon. After a few days you’ll start to see the shift in clothing. Then, once a few months pass by, look at the side where all of your clothing started. Whatever you have left on that side is stuff that you, more likely than not, will not wear ever again.

Because think about it, if you haven’t worn it in the past eight or so months, would you ever wear it? Probably not. So do yourself a favor and get rid of all the clothes you haven’t worn. You will see a huge reduction in clutter once you do that!

4. Leave your tags on

Sometimes it’s tempting to cut the tags off of new items right away, but with this trick you’re going to have to hold off on that urge. The premise behind this trick is that it lets you know what you actually wear versus what you do not.

So next time you go on a shopping spree, leave the tags on until you wear the items. Then, check back in your closet every once and a while and see if the tags are still on. If they are and you bought the item months ago, chances are it’s time to get rid of that piece because you’ll never wear it again.
