8 Must-See Fashion Films

By Victoria Robertson on July 25, 2015

Fashion is everywhere, especially in cinema. In fact, some of the most iconic films ever created involve fashion in some way, shape or form.

So for those of you obsessed with the movies and that can’t get enough fashion, here are eight must-see fashion films.

1. “The Devil Wears Prada”

Everyone loves Anne Hathaway, and Meryl Streep is absolutely iconic. So put the two together and what do you get? An instant classic, both in the world of fashion and out.

This is probably one of the most popular fashion movies of our generation, perfectly depicting the world of fashion through the story of a recent college grad that jumps at the opportunity to work for a fashion magazine.

It plays on all the stereotypes of the business and quickly became one of the most iconic fashion films ever made.

2. “Funny Face”

Audrey Hepburn is phenomenal in this film as a gorgeous librarian discovered by a photographer on assignment that just happens to photograph her and realize her potential as a model.

This fashion film has a great love story but an even better underdog story that typically propels these types of movies (and this one is no exception).

Definitely recommend this for any Hepburn fans.

3. “Clueless”

Everyone loves this movie. While it’s mostly a love story (loosely based on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”), the fashion element is present surrounding high school Queen B, Cher.

If you’re looking for a good laugh, a cutesy, teenage love story and the greatest ’90s fashion has to offer – this film is for you.

4. “Pretty Woman”

“Big mistake, huge.” The line is iconic, and so is the film.

Julia Roberts absolutely kills this role, and if you’re looking for one of the greatest underdog stories ever told, you need to see this one.

The battle between high fashion and poverty takes center stage in this modern take on the classic Cinderella story (one of so many I can’t even count). But I promise, this one is worth it.

Romance, underdogs and fashion … I’m starting to sense a pattern here, are you?

5. “Gone With The Wind”

The most classic love story of all has, you guessed it, countless fashion undertones.

While the story is tragic, and fashion isn’t centerfold, it’s still one of the greatest films on this list.

Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) is one of the most memorable southern belles to exist, even if she is fictional. And fashion-wise, there isn’t a more fashionable woman in the south.

6. “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”

Marilyn Monroe is of course one of the most recognizable actresses of all time, and this film is at the center of her numerous fashion moments.

Everyone knows that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but Monroe put a face to the saying and an unforgettable pink dress to that classic song.

While her dress in “The Seven Year Itch” and countless others are just as iconic, this film is the stand-out classic all fashionistas need to watch.

7. “Grease”

Yes, it’s a musical. Yes, it is a great commentary on fashion as well.

Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) starts out as the preppy, goody-two-shoes female that doesn’t take risks and dresses the part. It’s the transformation she undergoes throughout the film that makes this a great fashion film (amongst other things).

For one thing, that skin-tight bodysuit she wears in the last scene of the film depicts her character’s changes throughout the film. For another, that suit is phenomenal. They reportedly had to sew Newton-John into it before filming that last scene.

Ah, the pain we endure for fashion.

8. “The Wizard of Oz”

And last but not least, there’s “The Wizard of Oz.” Name one person that doesn’t know who wore those iconic ruby red slippers. I’ll bet you can’t.

Sure, this isn’t the most fashion-centered film on the list, but how can you keep it off when the footwear is so well known that people recognize in an instant that they belong to Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland). Can you name any other fashion items that warrant that same recognition?

Plus, it’s a movie that’s based on women fighting over shoes. Arguably making it the best fashion film ever.

So there you have it: fashion is everywhere and there’s no escape.

So you might as well accept it and watch these eight fashion films as soon as you get the chance.
