Submit Your Invention to IEEE DIY Project For Chance To Win $500

By Megan (Weyrauch) Johnson on September 24, 2015

Looking to showcase your technological prowess and interested in becoming one of the next up-and-coming engineers with the opportunity to gain worldwide recognition?

Enter your inventions in the IEEE DIY Project contest, which according to a recent press release was created to help encourage and support future makers by allowing them to showcase new and innovative projects to the IEEE social media community.

This year’s IEEE DIY Project, open to individuals 18 years or older, will be hosted online from September 16, 2015 to December 7, 2015. Participants will share their DIY projects online and visitors to the site can vote for their favorite submissions.

Last year’s competition generated over 300 unique projects on the IEEE DIY Project website from around the world with the grand prize awarded to Gaurav Gautam for his Wirelessly Operated Hand Glove Robot.

Submission categories include Green Tech, Accessibility, Intelligent Transportation, Public Safety, Entertainment, Education, Communication and Other.

The top five submissions win monetary prizes in the form of Amazon gift cards in your local currency. The grand prize winner will receive $500, second place wins $250, third place $100, and fourth and fifth place $50.

Submissions must be an engineering project that was built or created using hardware or software. The submission must include an image or video of what was built with a description and purpose of the technology created. A panel of judges will then vote on the winning project. Entries will be ranked based on originality, innovation and benefit to humanity.

In addition, John Cohn — IEEE Fellow, IBM Fellow and longtime DIY-er — will host a video series where he will provide commentary on randomly selected projects submitted throughout the competition.

“The DIY and the maker movement has been a life-long passion of mine and hosting this contest’s video series is a real honor,” Cohn said in the press release. “I’m always amazed by the creativity and resourcefulness that students can apply to a problem. I can’t wait to see what they cook up this year!”

Vote for your favorite DIY project online. Community members can vote once a day until December 7.
