Summer 2016 Anime You Should Be Watching

By Sam Finley on June 25, 2016

Summer is a time to take a break for most people, but for those of us with summer semesters, we still have the pressures of classes. We’d all like a little break, and anime is perfect for that, since the episodes are short enough to be a study break. Here are just four of some of the most anticipated series this summer:

Mob Psycho 100 – Airs July 12 – Studio Bones: From the creator of One-Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 follows 8th grader Kageyama Shigeo (nicknamed “Mob”), a strong and impressive Esper. Mob has realized his powers are dangerous and tries to hide them, but doing so puts him under emotional pressure, since his powers are driven by his emotions. Bottling this up of course means it’s gonna be explosive later on. Studio Bones is animating the series. They’ve done beautiful fan-favorites, like Full-Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and judging by the trailer, Mob Psycho 100 looks like it’ll also be wonderfully made. Writer ONE’s story seems to be a humorous one, mixing the mundane with the extraordinary. With the buzz One-Punch Man got, fans expect a lot from this series.

Berserk (2016) – Airs July 1 – Millepensee and GEMBA: This series will fill in a gap started right in the beginning of the original Berserk series from 1997, covering a story arc that anime never covered: the Black Swordsman arc. Guts is hunting down a group that means to do him and his lover Casca harm. Branded as an unholy sacrifice, he, too, is hunted. Armed with his sword and his own strength, he sets off to end this plague on his life. The animation from the trailer looks to be CG, which some people are picky about, but I think it only adds to a series like this, which is so full of action that it’ll look like a video game. If you’ve not seen any of the ‘90s Berserk series, now’s the time to watch it if this Macbeth-like story intrigues you. For the fans that have been waiting years and years, it’s finally time.

                     D. Gray-man Hallow – Airs July 5 – TMS Entertainment: With mangaka Katsura Hoshino’s recent break from her indefinite hiatus of writing and drawing D. Gray-man, this anime adaptation is definitely a must-see for many fans. The original character cast is back for more, still aiming to stop the Millennium Earl’s plot that could destroy the world. A series with a setting and aesthetic that is very dark yet adventurous and well-developed character personalities, this anime will definitely have to live up to the manga story-wise, but seeing as the last series was good, this one should be fantastic. If you haven’t watched D.Gray-man, now’s the time.

Orange – Airs July 4 – Telecom Animation Film: Not really your average slice-of-life anime here. Naho Takamiya has received a letter from herself – ten years into the future! The letter recounts the events of a certain day and then states she has a lot of regrets she hopes the past Naho can fix, especially regarding a classmate who will soon no longer be with the group of friends. The trailer’s animation looks gorgeous, and they have copied the manga’s art style very well. It looks like it’ll be a very emotional story.

These anime are what I consider the ones really worth watching this summer, but there are plenty more coming out that are sure to be big hits. Whether you’re on break and looking for something new to see or still dealing with school and wanting something to de-stress with, check out these titles. If you’re on campus for a summer semester and want to watch more, the Japanese Animation Club of Tallahassee (JACT) here at FSU is showing Osomatsu-san episodes every Saturday at 7:00pm upstairs at the Union in room 311B.
