What To Do With Your Sorority Shirts

As the last weeks of college are ticking down, college seniors are preparing to enter the scary unknown: the “real world.” This new reality consists of business casual, happy hour with colleagues, entry-level jobs and paying off college debt.

With this new transition to adulthood, many sorority sisters find themselves with an excess of shirts and nowhere to wear them (except to sleep). Upon graduation, a popular option for former sorority girls is to create a blanket out of old shirts. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to make one of these blankets.

Step 1 – Arrange your t-shirts on the floor to mimic how you want your blanket to look like. Take into consideration the color and context of each shirt to make sure it’s visually appealing.

Step 2 – Cut your shirt down the seams to separate the front from the back, and then cut off the neck of the t-shirt. Don’t cut your shirt into individual squares just yet!

Step 3 – Buy iron-on interfacing (lightweight) and iron it to the back of each shirt.

Step 4 (the most important step) – Measure your shirts. You want them to be even, so use a ruler and pencil to measure. Make sure you use fabric scissors to cut the fabric; other scissors will make the fabric snag.

Step 5 – Once you have all of the shirts evenly cut, lay them out in the pattern you wanted. A sewing machine works well, but you can hand-stitch the shirts together. To make the blanket better to cuddle with, buy a fuzzy/cozy fabric in one of your sorority’s colors as backing. Make sure you sew it together inside out, so the stitches are hidden in between the shirt-side and the fabric-side.

And there you have it, your new sorority shirt blanket! If this all seems too daunting, you can send your shirts to this company  to do it for you. The blankets are super cute. Plus, if you’re short on t-shirts, Dormify has great ones as well.
