Short Scary Stories for your Halloween Pleasure

By Maggie DeBlasis on October 31, 2013

Along with the hordes of costumed children and tons of fun-sized candy, Halloween is the time of year when scary stories rattle our wits and cause cold sweats. From classics like Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of the Cthulhu” to modern thrillers like Stephen King’s works, there’s something completely off about the human race’s obsession with scaring. So every year on October 31, children go out in hopes of receiving candy and not crossing paths with the Boogeyman, the Headless Horseman, or the Mummy.

Three months ago, user meiguess on the popular website Reddit asked fellow users to come up with the best horror stories in two sentences. And while you may not be able to go out and party or collect candy yourself on this spooky holiday, two sentences is just enough to make your skin crawl and your palms sweat. Here’s some food for thought.

“After struggling desperately to move any part of his paralytic body just to alert the doctors that he was conscious before they made the first incision, he was relieved to see that one of the nurses had noticed his pupils dilating from the bright light. She leaned in close and, in a whisper that tickled his ear, said ‘You think we don’t know you’re awake?’”– Clayboy731

“The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:07 before she pushed her long rotting nails through my chest, her other hand muffling my screams. I sat bolt upright, relieved it was only a dream, but as I saw my alarm clock read 12:06, I heard my closet door creak open.”– jmperson

“Try six words: I just saw my reflection blink.”– marino1310

“Being buried alive was bad enough. Realizing I wasn’t alone in my own grave was worse.”– harshcougar

“You walk through your home and find a door you’ve never seen before. The knob twists.”– JackK3tch

“Its not mine I have to point out and all credit goes to Fredrick Brown.

‘The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock at the door.’”– Scry67

And one story that could only terrify modern-day teenagers.

“Day 312. Internet still not working.”– fluffyponyza
