5 Fashion Rules to Ignore Right Now

While keeping up with trends can be fun, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to stick to every fashion rule in the book. In fact, some of the styles that were once on the no-no list are actually popular fads. Here are five fashion rules that you should definitely ignore.

1. Don’t Wear White After Labor Day

This rule has never made much sense to me. As a child I thought it should be the opposite way around: Shouldn’t you wear white in the winter because the snow is white? According to TIME, this ancient fashion rule may have come into existence due to logic (wearing white in the summer as a way to stay cool) or possibly even due to class (upper class wearing white for vacations and switching to darker colors during the year). Whatever the reason, it doesn’t mean you have to follow it. White jeans are not only stylish, but they can keep you warm in chilly weather.

2. Don’t Wear Multiple Pieces of Denim Clothing

Okay, I can see how this fashion rule came into existence. But if tastefully done, denim from head to toe can look casual and stylish. Try pairing two different shades or colors of denim. You could also pair a denim vest and colorful top with your favorite pair of skinnys.

3. Don’t Mix Patterns

Who says stripes and floral patterns can’t go together? Although mom (#1 follower of fashion rules) probably didn’t let you wear anything that didn’t perfectly match when you were younger, mixing patterns can produce an eye-catching and creative look.

4. You Should Only Wear Clothes that Fit Your Body Type

Magazines everywhere claim that certain types of clothes look best on certain types of bodies. While this may sometimes hold truth, looks are subjective and people should really just wear whatever styles they feel most comfortable and beautiful in. No person is built the same so placing people in distinct body type groups won’t be beneficial.  I have also yet to find someone that looks like a “triangle” or “circle.” That would require some strange-looking pants.

5. Wear a Minimum Amount of Accessories

I always hear things like “a little goes a long way” or that you should pair just one “accent accessory” with your outfits. But often, wearing several pieces of jewelry or layering up with accessories like scarves and belts can make your outfit unique. Accessories are also great conversation starters. People love to ask about the dozens of colorful bracelets or rings you decide to wear. Breaking the fashion rules can help you show off your personality and sense of style.

I am a junior Broadcast Journalism major and a member of Maryland's Unbound Dance Team and the 2014 UMD Orientation Staff. I hope to one day travel and give a voice to people around the world that need the media's attention and the community's help. I love dancing, participating in service projects, talking about books, watching movies, and eating large amounts of ice cream.
