Top 10 Reasons Why Working in College Sucks

By Kylie Exline on October 22, 2015

Many students work in college. For some of us, we’re so used to having to be to work in 20 that we forget just how much we hate it. Below is a list of why working is terrible, and if jobless, here are ten reminders as to why you should be thankful you don’t work.

1.      You Always Have the FOMO:

If you think there’s no such thing of having a “fear of missing out,” then you lack either a social life, or emotions. Whether or not you were going to go out on a random Tuesday night (probably weren’t), the fact that you have to work doesn’t help the situation. And no, I don’t want to see your 200 second long mystory depicting your great, drunken night.

2.      You Still Don’t Want to Spend Your Own Money:

We get it mom, we receive a paycheck now so we should have to pay some things because we’re an adult and should accept responsibility yada yada. But the truth is, minimum wage doesn’t pay for our drinking habits, or our need for coffee basically every day. We’re still your child and doing the right thing by attending a University… so can you deposit $20 please?

Beer.

3.       There’s Always Something Better to Do:

Sleeping is a necessity, as is eating, watching movies, Netflix, and Youtube. Although our parents may consistently remind us as to why we shouldn’t spend all of our time in bed, they just don’t understand: my bed and laptop get me!

4.      People Look Down on You:

Although we’re basically the same age, may possibly have or had a class together, and are all experiencing college, our peers still treat us as if we are not a human being. Whether we work on campus, a restaurant, or selling shoes, the disrespect we receive is a constant. I know you remember freshman year when I let you borrow a pencil to sign attendance, Andrew!

 5.      People “Forget” to Invite You to Things:

It never ends that you miss an invite to a party because people assume you’re working, even though you know you told them in person twice, texted them in the group chat, and updated your status that you actually had a Friday off. Looks like it’ll be another popcorn movie night with you and Mr. Snuggles. At least he invites you to hang out!

6.     Sometimes You’re Actually Tired:

There are those nights when all you want to do is have you and your bed be one. Life is hard, college is never-ending, and homework seems to pile on 24/7. And the last thing you want to do is go deal with annoying customers. Plus, you actually have to brush your hair and throw on pants, which never sounds inviting.

McDreamy.

7.      Not Getting Along with Your Boss/ Co-Workers aren’t a Thing:

In your everyday life, if you get in an argument with your roommate or best friend, you ignore them for two hours and then order pizza while bonding over how hot Bradley Cooper is. At work, you have to get along with your boss and co-workers, or else you’re jobless and getting yelled at by mom and dad. And we all know how great that is.

 8.      Bad Moods aren’t Allowed:

We all have those mornings, days, or weeks even, where we don’t want to do this thing called life. It seems as though it’s falling apart, and you just don’t want to deal. Well, this feeling doesn’t exist when you have work in an hour. Time to throw on your big boy/ girl pants and plaster a smile on your face. Welcome to adulthood, buddy!

 9.      You Don’t Have Time for Anything:

Or at least it seems that way. With school, interning, friendships, relationships, and our weekly date night with re-run episodes of McDreamy, work seems like an unnecessary must. Well just tell that to your bank account.  Yeah, you’d rather not.

10.  You Can’t Leave Town Whenever You Want:

Unfortunately you have a work schedule. What that means is you have to show up for your shift, sometimes miss a home football game (I know, it’s killer), or not be able to go on a weekend vacation with all of your friends (also a killer). There’s no such thing as a last minute trip home to surprise the fam, or an impromptu adventure to the beach three hours away. Guess you’ll just have to plan in advance, or not show up and get fired. That’s always an option.

I will admit, working in college is terrible. We feel as though we miss everything college has to offer (which is clearly a hyperbole). We want the freedom all of our peers have, and the time to partake in any given event possible. Though, there are a few pluses with having a job: some money is better than no money, and the parents view us as being a responsible young adult; sometimes.
