The Reason We Can't Sleep at Night

By Danielle Goodstadt on January 25, 2016

Stories told by our parents about meeting the “one” have progressively changed over time. Most of the time, all our parents do is make us feel bad about our choices and the guys we surround ourselves with. Sorry mom, that boy you’ve seen at school hasn’t sent me any love letters, asked me on a date, or even talked to me in person. There was that one time I thought things were going in another direction and he sent me a text that made me smile so hard I thought my jaw had broken in half. I even got the two-”y” “Heyy,” but that’s when I started to overthink.

Do I go for the “hi” or maybe add another “i” in there, or do I go the safe route and send a simple “hey” back? By the time you’ve decided how many “i’s” to add to the end of “hi,” he’s probably forgotten he even texted you first to begin with.

The reality of it all is that dating today is like dating your phone.

What happened to the good old days when texting didn’t exist and you actually had to go to one another’s houses to communicate? Or, dare I say it, even call each other on the phone?

As you grow up you start to realize that all of those fairy tale endings you once dreamed of as a kid can never actually happen in real life. The expectations you’ve set up for yourself have been crushed because you’ve realized you are not Cinderella, and your so-called “prince charming,” doesn’t even know you exist. You know you’ll never have that guy who finds your slipper and sees that it’s the perfect fit.

TV shows nowadays don’t make things any easier; take One Tree Hill for example. In One Tree Hill when Lucas Scott sweeps Peyton Sawyer off her feet, and tells her, “It’s you. When all my dreams come true, the one I want next to me, is you,” you realize all you want in life is someone to say that to you. A Lucas Scott of your own so to speak. You want to wake up from that dream, and have “the one” next to you.

But instead, you’re watching One Tree Hill while stuffing your face with a bag full of Skinny Pop. At least it says “skinny” on it.

You’re wondering what road to take to get to that “one,” and whether or not you’re going to take a wrong turn along the way and never find him. You know that if you allow yourself to fall asleep you’ll have one of those repetitive dreams with your one true love — you know, the one who doesn’t exist. And poof, once you wake up from that dream, you’re suddenly back to reality.

Now that it’s almost 5 a.m. you decide to leave all of your what-ifs for tomorrow and slowly fall back to sleep in your bed where you become your happiest self and living your fantasy life. You really try to fall asleep but by this point you’re tempted to take pictures of all those walk of shames you see outside of your window, ranging from half-naked girls holding their shoes and clothes, to girls bold enough to still be wearing their 5-inch heels this early in the morning.

And finally, just when you start to fall asleep, you’re woken up by the sound of your alarm clock, beeping unceremoniously loud against the quiet of the morning.

If only life had a snooze button like your alarm clock , then you would have more time to find what it is you’ve been searching for for so long.

Instead of dreaming about the life Peyton Sawyer has or the Cinderella fairy tale you thought could be a reality, make your life the way you want it to be.

Instead of sitting up all night thinking about never finding “the one,” think about this:

“If you can visualize it, if you can dream it, there’s some way to do it.” – Walt Disney

Forget about that snooze button, get out of bed, and make that dream a reality. Act upon those dreams and go after what you really want. Change the channel from romance to reality and create your own fairy tale ending.
