What To NOT Wear On A Blind Date

By Gretchen Kernbach on February 29, 2016

When it comes to blind dates, the only thing you really know about a person is what venue he/she picks. Therefore, the only thing you really have control over is your outfit.

What you wear says a lot about yourself and can actually determine how the date goes. Luckily, I have developed a guide on what to not wear according to your date location/activity.

Fancy Dinner Date

What do I consider fancy? The meals must be listed over $20, so your dress has to be worth more than that as well. Yes, I said dress. If your blind date is taking you to a super nice restaurant, you owe it to him to look presentable. He is trying so you should as well.

Now, I am not talking about a ball gown. And I am sure as heck not talking about a tight, short club dress. Perhaps a dress that reaches right above the knee and does not require you sucking in your stomach the entire night.

As for shoes, like I said before, you are not going to a club. My only advice to you, make sure they match the dress and are comfortable to walk in. You never know, at the end of the night you might have to make a mad dash for the door.

Amusement Park

Personally, this idea of a date is one of my favorites. Therefore, to all you ladies out there, do not screw it up — for me.

Tennis shoes. Gym shoes. Sneakers. Whatever you want to call it, wear it. You will be walking around the park for at least four hours. And, let me tell you, the first impression you do not want to give your blind date is the one where you complain nonstop.

In addition, look up the weather beforehand. Obviously, if it is a hot day wear shorts and a white or black shirt. All of us women sweat just as much as men do, but you cannot show him that just yet. For a colder day, consider wearing cropped leggings or bringing a sweatshirt. Blind dates are all about being prepared and not looking stupid. Accordingly, I find myself having to say this, do not look “super” cute for amusement park dates.

Concert

You and your date have found out you both like the same band and would love to meet each other at their next concert. First thing’s first — is it inside or outside? You have to keep in mind that indoor concerts have potential to get very hot and humid, something that can be hazardous to your hair. Same goes with outdoor venues; basically your hair is screwed.

Now that you have accepted the fact your hair will look its worst, let’s focus on your clothes. If you are going to a country concert, feel free to bring out those cowboy boots. Dress summery for this one.

If you happen to be going to a rock or rap concert, wearing the exact opposite would benefit you in the end. I recommend wearing jeans and a dark colored shirt. Avoid wearing expensive clothing because people at these kinds of concerts can get rowdy.

No matter what genre the concert is, do not wear a dress. Chances are you will be going back and forth between standing and sitting. A dress just makes things more complicated. In addition, heels are never a smart idea for a concert.

Sporting Event

Your blind date is a big sports fan and you are not. Now is the time to fake it ’till you make it.

Whether it is a football, basketball, hockey, or baseball game, the goal is to look somewhat athletic. Do not wear a dress or skirt; that is completely out of the question. Instead, make your outfit as casual as possible. The best case scenario — you have the team’s jersey. If you don’t, ask around for a shirt with the team’s logo.

Coffee House

The most casual of the casual dates. Individually, I think this is the best place for a blind date. There is no pressure to wear something fancy or different to your taste to fit the venue.

A coffee house is just two people sitting and talking. Drinking coffee should not be too difficult, right? I mean, it is better than pretending to know what a two-point conversion is.

For a simple date like this, dress however you want; you know of course, besides pajamas or just your underwear. Casual wear is jeans or leggings with a nice blouse on. If you want to be an overachiever, add on a scarf or jacket.

Do not feel pressured to go above and beyond on a blind date. This person can turn out to be a total flop and you will wonder why you wasted $30 on new makeup. Don’t waste $30 on new makeup.
