3 Traits to Look for in Your Moving Company

By Danielle Wirsansky on June 13, 2017

Moving is a huge hassle and you want to make it as easy, smooth, and stress-free as possible. And sometimes, the easiest way to do that is to simply hire a moving company to do the work for you.

But in order to keep the move easy, smooth, and stress-free even while using a moving company, you need to choose the right moving company. You do not want to make the wrong choice and accidentally make your move instead incredibly stressful — exactly what you were trying to avoid. You have to choose the right moving company, but how?

There are often a lot of options and it can be overwhelming to wade through them all. To help you narrow down your search, you can look for specific traits in your moving company. To learn more about what traits to look for, read on!

Affordability

The first thing you want to know is if you can afford the moving company you are interested in or not. That is often the deal breaker. If you have an unlimited budget, then go ahead and dream big and choose the moving company that you think fits your needs best. But if you are like most people and on a budget, especially a college student on a college student budget, then you need to pay close heed to the price of the services of a moving company.

Is it clear how much the service you are requesting will cost? Can the company give you an estimate? Are you able to clearly calculate the costs of the services yourself? If a company is not upfront about how much it will cost to use them then simply do not use them. Do not take the risk of spilling over your budget because a moving company tries to pull a fast one on you. You need to know from the get-go before the company’s movers even arrive that you can afford to pay everyone for their hard work.

Professionalism

After you know that you can afford the services of a particular moving company, you need to make sure that they are still professional. This does not mean that they have to be expensive and have fancy equipment or uniforms. What is most important is the professionalism of their behavior as well as how they deal with you.

Do they speak to you courteously on the phone? Are they able to answer your questions both politely and competently? Does anyone speak down to you when you have a question or do not understand something or do they thoughtfully lay everything out and explain it to you? Did they misplace your paperwork? Did they never respond to your email inquiries or voicemails?

These are all terribly important questions you have to ask yourself. If you start to work with a moving company and they are already behaving unprofessionally before you have even gotten to the moving out stage then this is not a company you want to continue to work with. They have already stressed you out and you have yet to even work with them yet! A company that stresses you out prematurely does not deserve your money. Stick with companies that work hard for your money and are more deserving of it.

Promptness

Another trait to look for in your moving company is promptness. It connects back to professionalism and it stretches to before the actual moving date.

Were they prompt in responding to your inquiries about their services, whether by email or by phone? Do they call to check in? Are they prompt at connecting you to the right person rather than keeping you on hold endlessly? Do they call you back quickly when you have questions that they need to investigate?

Then you need to consider their promptness in other aspects. What about your scheduled time to actually move? Do they give you a really wide range of time that they might arrive to move you out at or a specific time? Have you communicated clearly what time you need to be out by and have they communicated back how long they think your move will take?

It can be incredibly frustrated when a company tells you that they will be there sometime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. You do not have an entire day to waste waiting on a company! You need to know when they are going to be there and when they are going to be done. Then you have to trust and be able to depend on them actually arriving at the set time. If you do not believe that they can follow through and arrive at the time both parties have agreed upon, then it is not a company you want to work with.
