Low-Maintenance Hang Outs for Introverts

By Cassidy Camp on June 30, 2017

As an introvert, it can be difficult to figure out what to do with friends, especially if your friends are introverts too. I constantly find myself with the struggle of “I want to do something, but I don’t want to go out or deal with a bunch of strangers!” Never fear, fellow introverts, because I have a few ideas for things that you can consider doing in those situations; low-maintenance hang outs.

So, what is a low-maintenance hang out? Low-maintenance hang outs are the times that you and your friends are both totally independent in what you’re doing, so it takes the pressure off both the host and the invitee. It’s a time for friends to be able to hang out in the same space, but they don’t necessarily have to be interacting the whole time. Low-maintenance hang outs are kind of acting like you and your friends live together; for example, we could put a TV show on in the background and just hang out on the couches and switch between chatting, phone surfing, and watching the show. This way, friends get to hang out with one another without the stress of figuring out something to do, getting ready, and having to go into public. Low-maintenance hang outs require only the basics: friends and food. Everything else is to be decided (or not), which can lead to movies, puzzles, games, or just sitting on the same couch showing each other memes from the internet.

Some of my favorite low-maintenance hang out activities are card games, board games, puzzles, movies, video games, studying for different classes at the same time, and phone surfing together. Something that I always love doing at low-maintenance hang outs is baking something easy (something you can just throw in the oven and set a timer) like brownies or cookies. To me, there’s nothing like fresh, warm sweets to say, “lazy day!” Having snacks makes low-maintenance hang outs way more successful if you don’t want to give free reign of the kitchen to your guest. Don’t forget, friends and food are the two things needed for low-maintenance hang outs!

Low-maintenance hang outs are perfect for when you want to see your friend, but you really want to do something chill. Although low-maintenance hang outs work best with people that you’re really comfortable with, they can work with newer friends too! In those situations, it’s good to set boundaries with your guest to be sure that your fridge doesn’t get raided, but most people are pretty receptive to house rules. Just be sure to tell them where the bathroom and snacks are, and have some lazy fun!
