Creating a Holiday Wish List for Your Summer Camp Job

By Kaitlin Hurtado on November 13, 2017

If you are lucky enough, you might already have a summer job and/or internship lined up for you after this academic year. These summer gigs can range from internships working the reception desk at your local dentist to working at a summer camp.

If you are looking to work at a summer camp this summer, prepare yourself by asking for items to aid you in your future job on this year’s holiday wish list.

A backpack

Depending on what kind of summer camp you are going to work for, you can expect to be moving around quite a bit and taking part in different activities on a daily basis. These activities can range from indoor meals to outdoor hikes or scavenger hunts, meaning you’ll be on-the-go and unable to take a break and return to your cabin to freshen up or take a breather.

Add a sturdy backpack to your holiday wishlist that you can depend on during the entirety of your summer. Having a reliable backpack will allow you to use it to travel to and from the camp and actually use it on a daily basis to keep everything you need on you and accessible. You can carry necessities like a water bottle, snacks, a jacket, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer, and travel-sized personal grooming items like facial wipes or a mini hairbrush.

Asking for a backpack that is more commonly used for hiking or other outdoor activities will save you the risk of using your personal backpack that you use for school that isn’t typically meant for outdoor use. You can use your backpack for any and all activities without worrying about it being weatherproof or easily tearing from being thrown around by campers.

A water bottle

It’s always important to stay hydrated, but especially so when you are going to be working at a summer camp. You are going to constantly be on your feet and sticking to a schedule that is not yours, you’ll be interacting with different people, and will most likely work in higher temperatures. The last thing you want to be is sick due to not being hydrated enough and stuck in the camp’s infirmary.

Similar to the reasons for asking for a new backpack, asking for a water bottle made for outside or sports activities will help you stay hydrated when you have water with you at all times. Go for something that suits your personal needs and taste so that you are more inclined to actually use it.

If you know you prefer to drink out of straws, go for a water bottle designed with a mouthpiece for easy drinking. If you prefer to have cold water, go for an insulated water bottle to keep your water chilled, even in outdoor settings.

A watch

Like other jobs, your position at a summer camp may prohibit you from using your phone on the job. This means having your phone tucked away and out of sight, not letting you check it even for the time.

Instead of risking getting in trouble for being on your phone, even if it’s just checking the time for a couple of seconds, put a watch on your holiday wish list to save you from the risk. While you may want to ask for a flashy, stylish watch as a present, you are better off looking for a watch for its function.

Research different watches that are designed for an active lifestyle that you would be living at summer camp. Not only will you be able to tell time, but also set alarms to keep to the summer camp’s schedule and keep yourself and other campers in check. Having a watch designed for outside use will also lower the risk of you breaking it due to it being too fragile for outdoor activity.

A Bluetooth speaker

If you don’t already own a Bluetooth speaker, it’s a great idea to ask for one this holiday season. You can liven up downtime at summer camp by blasting music and bond with other workers and campers with something other than silence. Having a Bluetooth speaker will also allow you to take it with you to different activities.

If you’re going to be outside doing an activity, bring it along to provide some background music and make it even more fun for campers by asking for their music suggestions to add to a playlist that will suit everyone’s interests.
