How to Earn Some Extra Cash in Your Wallet

By Amanda Cohen on November 17, 2017

Between tuition, textbooks, clothing, food, school supplies, and everything else, college is extremely expensive. Even if you are not paying for everything on your own, you know what a burden college finances can be on you and your family.

I’m sure most of you have thought about getting a job, but it is way too hard to have a time-consuming job with a full class load, a social life, and time to take care of yourself. So, how do you make some extra money as a college student?

Unfortunately, looking for spare change in-between the couch cushions just isn’t going to cut it if you want to pile some extra money into your wallet, but have no fear! I am here to tell you about the different ways to make some extra money as a college student.

The beauty of finding a job right now is that places are looking to hire a lot of people since many of their past employees graduated in the Spring last year! Read on if you want to hear of some stellar ways to earn extra cash to pay for necessities, a drink at the bar, or to pay for holiday gifts!

Delivery Driver

Delivery driver jobs are prevalent on all college campuses, and they are fast and easy ways to make some extra cash through both salary and tips. If you have a car (or if you are in a busy city and have a bike), have good conversational skills, and are willing to work basically at any time, this job is right for you.

You won’t be earning bundles of cash, but you will be earning enough to make a dent in any potential debts you might have. In addition, delivery drivers usually have flexible hours, especially if you are working on a college campus.

Uber and Lyft Driver

Uber and Lyft, like Amazon, are taking over the world. I’ve talked to a few Uber and Lyft drivers and becoming a driver and maintaining your job is not overly complicated (obviously job details should be thoroughly discussed with your employer). If you have a car, extra time, and are willing to drive around people night and day, this job is for you.

In addition, these jobs are great because there is now a tip function on both of the apps, which, from what I understand, goes directly to the individual drivers. Similar to being a delivery driver you won’t make mad money with this job, but some extra pocket cash is never a bad thing.

Waitressing

Being a waiter/waitress is hard work and a bigger time commitment than the jobs listed above. However, it does pay better and tips are a major contributor to your paycheck. This job requires you to be kind, personable, balanced (in order to hold trays of food), and requires a dress code.

If you have the time to waitress, I suggest that you look into it because this is a huge moneymaker (I use that term loosely). If you become a waiter/waitress at a restaurant in a college town, your hours will be much more flexible and your bosses will usually take into account the academic calendar of that particular university.

Bartending

Bartending is such a fun job to have as a college student. You get to be in the midst of all of the action at your local college bars, and your tips are favorable because you have people being overly generous after drinking a few drinks. If you are not a night-owl, this job probably isn’t for you. But, if you don’t mind being up late and if you don’t mind sacrificing a few nights of partying with your friends to make a paycheck, look to see who’s hiring! However, you do need to be prepared to deal with drunken college students, which can be frustrating, but, hey, it’s still a paycheck so why not!

Selling clothes and Other old items

Okay, so this may not be a part-time job per se, but it is definitely a great way to make money from the comforts of your bed. Take advantage of websites like eBay, Craig’s List, Poshmark, and any other used clothing or item store and sell the stuff you don’t need!

Utilize Facebook groups also if you want to sell to people directly on your college campus. As long as your stuff is in pretty good condition, you won’t have any problems making money using this method. Let’s be real, do you really still need the University sweatshirt that you bought during your college tour? I think not!

With holiday season quickly approaching, I really hope that you use these suggestions to your advantage so that you can buy gifts or pay off some of your student debt. Happy job-hunting everyone, I hope you all can add some extra cash to your bank account!
