Boost Your Mentality With Art Before Classes Start

By Rene Santana on August 10, 2019

Mastering the art of summering takes many years. Most of us just resort to laying around and waiting for friends to call us up to go out. Others go on vacation with family, while others work till they drop. Very few spend their free hours studying or shadowing. None of these options are bad. But might I suggest another option?

I recently went to an art fair with a graphic design buddy, and boy oh boy was it something else. There was much walking involved, so I got my steps in. The event hall was semi-full, with crowds somewhat dispersed. There were art students with notebooks, enthusiasts with a pretty penny, and regular folk such as myself, all meandering through the tall walls that made up the exhibit. I felt a bit out of place at first but quickly settled. Shortly afterward,  I started analyzing each and every painting. I was hooked. Art shows are where creativity thrives. Feeling inspired, I didn’t want to make art, but instead write (’cause writing is the best).

As I breezed through the art fair, I felt my head exploding from all the overwhelming creativity. As we’re all visual thinkers, I knew everyone at the art fair couldn’t help but stop and stare. Everything there had a meaning waiting to be explored. As I gravitated towards each piece of artwork, I felt my mind open up to new ideas and wonders. This is was the first time I had ever gone to an art fair. And yet, I felt like it wouldn’t be the last.

Attending music concerts have made me feel that same sort of overwhelming sensation. You see and awe at an artist’s raw talent. The worst thing you could do is shut yourself in and not let any of the creativity seep into your thoughts. I don’t think there’s any other way to get inspiration than to take in someone else’s art. And so that is why I strongly encourage you, before this summer ends, to either try something new or to go find an art medium to soak up. Maybe even both!

Trying something new will always result in a changed perspective. Even if you’re stubborn and don’t want to admit it. A change in perspective is exactly what you need before tackling another year at college.

College should be teaching one single fundamental skill: to question. Though it’s my opinion, I think if you’re letting yourself go through the motions from class to class, you’re probably doing college wrong. Alas, I saw people do so when I was back in college. I may have not liked what I saw people change into, but I had to fight that as I quickly learned I can’t change others.

Self-reflection aside, the power of art helps us escape the world we’re in and make our own interpretation.

Once school starts, you may not have time to go to a concert or art show, but I’ve found that these tips in my previous article help immensely with finding a creative outlet.
