Are you REALLY gonna wear that to class?

By Nkongho Beteck on September 11, 2012

People tend to follow trends because they are attracted to the “new and novel… things that provide a feeling of change, and, perhaps, progress”, says the Oxford University Press. However, as the seasons change and the desire to keep up with trends arrives, some college students begin dressing less than progressive. Although college is a time of exploring and expression, it is very important to remember that school is still in session and one still needs to keep up with an air of professionalism. But of course, trends are constantly appearing and hard to ignore. If you absolutely must wear them, here are five tips on some of the fall trends to help keep you looking appropriate in the classroom.

1. Coated jeans

The feel of this jean tends to have a waxy texture and if black, looks like leather in the light. To avoid looking like a dominatrix, try to wear just the black jean and crop the bottom of the jean for a more casual look. Wear heavy garments on top and add prints as distractions from the pants.

2. Color Blocking

Wearing super bright colors together may not only cause others to squint from eye irritation, but can also be distracting in the classroom. Try not to look clownish by staying away from neon colors and dressing more relaxed. More subtle tones, no matter what colors, should look awesome together.

3. Gold

Although this element has grazed the runways multiple times, it is more suitable for the night club and not an academic setting. If you are one who must have the shiny embellishment, try to wear it only in one area and only at once. A single pair of earrings, a necklace, or a belt will be sure to brighten up any outfit

4. Romper

They may be known as the “onesie” for the more fashion-forward age, but this look is more suited for the beach. To dress it up for fall, conceal it; wear your romper as just your top or add garments and wear it as cute shorts.

5. Over-sized printed sweater

It’s never really a good idea to try and look heavier than you actual are, or to attempt to dress more like you are ready to snuggle up in bed than stay alert in class. Unfortunately, the over-sized sweater implies both. If you are in the mood to stay comfy, aim for a single color or bold stripes at best.

Looking AND feeling great is important. But remember, although you are surrounded by hundreds of people on campus, you are ultimately there to learn. Dress your best and dress to impress!
