The most interesting classes UMD has to offer

By Mel DeCandia on April 3, 2013

As scheduling time draws nearer, students are starting to consider their options for next semester. For those less sure about what classes to take, read on and find out about some of the most unique classes one can take at the University of Maryland!

1)   Self-Presentation in the Age of YouTube (JOUR130, 3 Credits)

As just about every college student is now invested in social media, this course is important for more than just journalism students. This course, available to new freshman, teaches students how to properly manifest themselves across various media, be it radio interviews, video blogs or even in online comments. Through both individual and group presentation, students learn to present themselves publicly with a particular focus on oral communication.

2)   Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies (LGBT200, 3 Credits)

With recent legislation debate over the Defense of Marriage Act as well as other LGBT civil rights, this class remains as relevant as ever. An introductory level course, LGBT200 studies several aspects of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life through a variety of different lenses: anthropological, historical, psychological and sociological. Students spend the majority of the class studying work written by and about the LGBT people and community.

3)   History of Popular Music, 1950s – Present (MUSC205, 3 Credits)

Whether you’re a Top 40 junkie or an indie music fiend, this course following the history of popular music over the past half-century is a fun change in an ordinarily mundane schedule. The course chronicles the history of rock music, which also encompasses the genres of blues, soul, metal and rap. Furthermore, what is especially interesting, the class observes popular music as a social history.

4)   Couple Relationships (FMSC260, 3 Credits)

If you’ve ever wondered why your middle school relationships didn’t work out, this course may give you the answers you’ve been waiting for. The family sciences course covers couple relationships at different stages of life from courtship through dating and marriage. The class is generally restricted to majors only, but non-major students with less than 60 credits can also take the class to fulfill a general education requirement.

5)   Psychology of Evil (PSYC289E, 3 Credits)

For the Law and Order and Criminal Minds addict in all of us, this psychology course forces enrolled students to contemplate evilness. Students attempt to find answers to questions about why evil exists, whether people are born or learned evil and what makes good people do evil things. The course delves into scientific studies of evil and addresses the challenges of measuring ‘evilness’ in relation to biological and social contexts.
