Apple releases iOS 7 to mixed reviews

Apple released iOS 7, its newest operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPhone Touch, to its eager Apple fanatics this Wednesday. iOS 7 is arguably the most dramatic software update Apple has released since the original iPhone’s incarnation.

The new system features an added Control Center that makes for easy access to Wi-Fi, flashlight and other settings, as well as AirDrop file-sharing service, according to Apple. Oh, and it has a completely new look. “A pure representation of simplicity,” according to Apple, iOS 7’s Message app is redesigned and Photos comes with pre-loaded filters for all of your pictures, among other features.

Unsurprisingly the hype, which has surrounded the iOS 7’s release since its introduction in June, yielded mixed reviews from consumers. “I think that from a user experience standpoint Apple went in the wrong direction, but from a design standpoint it’s beautiful and a hugely needed refresh,” said Ben Silber, junior mechanical engineering major. For others, the refresh Silber discussed didn’t seem so needed. “I think it was completely unnecessary of Apple. The old software was just fine,” said sophomore journalism major Mike Siegel.

Junior criminology major Sana Jafarzadeh said she hated the new software, noting that the system seemed to still have a few glitches and slowed her phone down. “The [Photos update] is the only cool thing because you can put filters on your photos, but that’s why we have Instagram. It’s a waste of space,” Jafarzadeh said. And the iOS 7 takes up a good deal of space on the iPhone—about 3.1 to 3.3 gigabytes, forcing many users to delete memory solely to make room for it.

Nonetheless, there are still plenty of users who think it was worth it: like junior elementary education major Mikynsi Steffan. Steffan said she loved the user-friendly new look of the software especially. Steffan listed the Control Center among her favorite of the added features, along with the Weather app and the “more convenient” means of minimizing windows.

Disgruntled users will likely adjust to Apple’s newest batch of changes in time, as they have to all past updates. Nonetheless, the iOS 7 is undeniably a game-changer for the company that could impact current and future consumers alike.
