Cons: Grade for the class is almost entirely based on papers.
Cons: a lot of work for a core class depends on what TA you have... wasted a lot of ink and paper for this class
she seems to be a very nice person
lecture was just an elaboration of the readings given to us..
her tests were identifying terms... she would give us 70+ terms and only choose 8
there would be a weekly paper which is pretty easy
- Very organized.
- Always finished lectures on time.
Cons: - Pretty vague lectures (meaning it's hard to know what to take notes on so it's best to just write down everything).
- I have absolutely no interest in women's studies/history and still do not after taking the class.
The mid-term and (half of) the final are identifying terms from throughout the semester. We're given a term list (about 60 for the midterm and close to 80 for the final). The way the class is taught, it was pretty easy to identify which terms were the ones that would be tested, so for the final, I only really focused on 18 terms and I did perfectly fine. The other half of the final was a 6-page paper evaluating the material since the mid-term.
There's also a 10-page paper in the middle of the course (after the mid-term) and a 5-page paper earlier in the semester.
The amount of reading is ridiculous. On average, it's about 70 pages a week. But there were a few weeks in the middle of the semester when it was 100+ pages per week.
You have to be REALLY diligent taking notes because you will DEFINITELY want them if you want to be specific in your arguments while writing the papers.
The T.A. Rachel knows the material EXTREMELY well and expects everyone else to as well. My way to get around this was to try and read one of the secondary sources and skim one of the primary sources for the week and just talk about that a LOT so it didn't look as bad when I didn't talk during the rest of section. Boom.
Cons: Lecture could be a bit dry at times. the reading journals due every week were a little annoying.
A so-so class. Is a good one if you're into the subject.
